A Successful Day & Plans For More!

Dedicating an afternoon at Ben’s Bells last Friday warmed out hearts! We enjoyed spending time with one another while soaking up this beautiful weather. We look forward to painting with this organization again in the future!

What NSSLHA has in store for the next few weeks:

Shoe Drive: From November 20th-December 4th, we will be collecting shoes and/or socks for children. A box will be put on the first floor of the Speech Building. Please come donate if you can!

Take advantage of our wealth of knowledge!  The MAPS program within NSSLHA is hosting a Mentor/Mentee Night on December 3rd for undergraduates and graduate students. This is meant to encourage others in our department to both seek advice and/or share a little wisdom.  MAPS is an incredible resource for students to learn the steps involved in the graduate application process from those who have already gone through it. The time and place will be announced as the date approaches closer!

I Can Read EventDecember 5th 4:30-5:30pm in the Lower Level of Bookstore. I CAN READ program is a literacy program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing children in the GBC clinic. At this event, the children will be reading poems and short excepts from books. NSSLHA members attending the event will be in the audience listening to the stories.

Last but not least… (Just in time for the holidays)

Cookies, Cocoa, Cards: Come enjoy holiday music, drinking hot chocolate, and decorating holiday cards that will be donated to Diamond Children’s Medical Center. This event will take place on December 5th from 6-7 in Room 205.

NSSLHA Open House Welcomed Families to the UofA

Family Weekend 2013NSSLHA Board members, led by Caitlin Lentz (president) and Alisa Wang (social chair), organized a tour and lunch event for NSSLHA members and their families to socialize, meet faculty members, and see a little of the labs and clinic. Parents and grandparents spent time in the Voice Research Lab with Dr. Robin Samlan, learning about current vocal tract research and sharing singing technique. Parents and undergraduates toured the clinic areas and learned about the types of clients treated in the Grunewald-Blitz Clinic and the Clinic for Adult Communication with Jennifer Casteix. Dr. Jim Dean discussed current audiological trends. Department Head Dr. Pelagie Beeson spoke with families and shared information about SLHS.

Families enjoyed a lovely lunch of sandwiches, chips, and cookies donated by Paradise Bakery. To top of the weekend, the UA Wildcats beat the Utah Utes, 35 to 24.

SLHS is proud to have such active student groups.
